Emlyn Johnson is a performer, educator, and presenter based in Rochester, New York. An advocate for new music, Emlyn has recently performed with Ensemble Signal, Slee Sinfonietta, OSSIA New Music Ensemble, and Eastman's Musica Nova. In the 2012-2013 season she made her Kodak Hall at Eastman Theater debut, performing Pierre Boulez's Memoriale with Brad Lubman and Musica Nova.
Emlyn is the flutist, director, and creator of Music in the American Wild (musicintheamericanwild.com), a musical celebration of the 2016 U.S. National Park Service centennial. As the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant, Emlyn led an ensemble of seven Eastman-affiliated musicians on tour of several national parks and historic landmarks during summer 2016, premiering new works inspired by the majesty and history of America's public lands in natural theaters from caves to mountaintops. Emlyn is also a founding director of Sunset Concerts (facebook.com/sunsetconcertscc), a free chamber music series in Rochester begun in summer 2014.
Emlyn is equally at home in the world of standard repertoire and is a recent prizewinner of the Texas Flute Society's Myrna Brown Competition. She can be heard on recordings of the Eastman Wind Ensemble and University of Michigan Symphony Band, and she is an active performer in western New York and beyond. In Rochester her involvement in the flute community extends to her work as Program Chair of the Rochester Flute Association, a position she assumed in 2015.
An enthusiastic teacher, Emlyn is the Adjunct Assistant Professor of Flute at University at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo). Emlyn was also the Adjunct Instructor of Flute at SUNY Oswego during the 2014-2015 year. She taught at the Eastman Community Music School from 2011-2015 and currently has an active private studio in Rochester and Buffalo. She was a 2013 winner of Eastman's prestigious Teaching Assistant prize, and in 2012 she taught flute at the summer arts camp Belvoir Terrace.
Emlyn recently completed her doctoral degree at the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Bonita Boyd. Her past teachers include Amy Porter and Dr. Brooks de Wetter-Smith.
